A great way for teaching in the ministry is to allow a young man to intern at a church for the summer. There are many good young men in Bible college which would love to have such an opportunity. Such an internship if done in a planned manner will be a great benefit for both the intern and pastor. I am speaking as one who has been on both sides.
Here are just a few guidelines which I would suggest:
- Have a set timeline of service.
- Be sure to compensate them for their service.
- Get the intern involved in every area of ministry which your church operates.
- Give the intern time to preach.
- Be sure that regular door-to-door soul winning is in their schedule.
- Even in a multi-staff church, have them report regularly to the senior pastor.
- Provide a detailed schedule of expectation and responsibilities for them at the very beginning.
- Give them books to read during the summer which you select to help them grow.
An internship can be a great summer of growth and set a young man for a future ministry for Christ. I can personally attest to what it did in my life. One extra note is to encourage you to contact Pastor David Teis at Liberty Baptist Church in Las Vegas. Brother Teis has done a superb job in putting together a summer internship program.
