Abraham Lincoln: A Man of Faith and Courage

 Author:  Joe Wheeler

We live in an age which seeks to rewrite history so as to downplay or even outright remove godly influence from our heritage.  Abraham Lincoln has been such a one to receive this historical abuse in recent years.  Recently I picked up this book and read it on a trip.

Wheeler seeks to show the life, faith and courage of Lincoln as a result of ten years of personal study.  His book is full of fascinating stories and wonderful quotes from Lincoln.  Wheeler’s book will encourage you as you see a man who was the most revered leader of our nation.

America in Crimson Red

Author: James R. Beller
Publisher: Prairie Fire Press

It is difficult to find good books dealing with Baptist History, however James Beller has given an excellent volume on the Baptist history in the United States. This book is extensive (approximately 500 pages), accurate and documented. This volume will aid in showing you what pivotal role Baptists played in the founding of our nation.

I feel such a volume is a must read for Baptists. As an independent Baptist, I read these great accounts of our history with renewed thanks to God for the Baptist movement in our nation. This book has a high recommendation from me.

John Newton: From Disgrace to Amazing Grace

Author: Jonathan Aitken
Publisher: Crossway Books

The general story of the life of John Newton is fairly well-known among Christians. It is good for one to read a more detailed account of his conversion, life and ministry. Newton’s life involved so much more than the writing of “Amazing Grace.” This book provides great detail concerning Newton’s pasturing as well as his friendships with William Cowper and William Wilberforce. The writer of the book, Jonathan Aitken is a well-known British author and politician, but most importantly a believer in Christ. You would do well to spend more time examining the life of John Newton.

Spurgeon: Prince of Preachers

Author: Lewis Drummond
Publisher: Kregel Publications

No doubt that any preacher who truly loves and reads great sermons of the past has found himself reading of Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s great sermons. Truly, he was the “prince of preachers.” Dr. Lewis Drummond, former president of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary wrote and published this volume in 1992. Although there are a number of Spurgeon biographies, Drummond’s is quite extensive and detailed at over 800 pages.

Drummond’s book is well documented and covers in depth the life of Spurgeon with a tie-in to John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. This book will allow you to examine Spurgeon’s life, ministry and trials in a very comprehensive way. I encourage you to discipline yourself to read the entire volume rather than moving around to various parts of interest. Many lessons may be learned as we examine the life of Spurgeon.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament

Author: G. Albert Darst

It has been stated correctly that the Lord Jesus Christ is the focus of the bible. Greg Darst has taken years of study to put in one volume the proof that Jesus Christ can be found in each book of the Old Testament. This book is divided into three sections:

  • #1 – contains all designations of Christ arranged alphabetically
  • #2 – contains all the physical aspects of Christ arranged alphabetically
  • #3 – arranged by mentions of Christ in each book of the Old Testament

This volume is of such great value to every preacher, teacher and Bible student. It contains over 300 pages and is available in both soft and hard cover. I personally know Brother Darst and know of his character and passion for God’s Word. If you would like to order a copy of this book, you may contact me personally.

What’s On Your Mind?

Author: Dr. John Goetsch
Publisher: Striving Together Publications

There are not very many books that I have read through more than once. This book by Dr. Goetsch is one in which I have read through twice. There is such a battle for the mind today with believers in Christ. Dr. Goetsch is a godly man and gifted preacher who presents how God desires to “change our thinking as well as our behavior.” The book may be summed up in his own words: “This book is about letting the mind of the Master become the master of your mind!”

Dr. Goetsch biblically deals with the mind and the battles we face with it. He uses good personal illustrations throughout the book to help drive the points home. Let me encourage pastors to keep copies of this book handy to give to those you may have to counsel. It is a book not to be simply read, but most importantly to be applied.
